The newest member of our solar system Picture above is an artist's concept of the planet catalogued as 2003UB313 at the lonely outer fringes of our solar system. Our Sun can be seen in the distance. The new planet, which is yet to be formally named, is at least as big as Pluto and about three times farther away from the Sun than Pluto. It is very cold and dark. The planet was discovered by the Samuel Oschin Telescope at the Palomar Observatory near San Diego, Calif., on Jan. 8, 2005 by astronomers Mike Brown (Caltech), Chad Trujillo (Gemini Observatory), and David Rabinowitz (Yale University). They discovered Sedna and have proposed a name to the IAU who will announce it when that name is accepted.
Pictures below: A view of the solar system from the north down. The four circles show the orbits of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The yellow dot in the center is the sun. The earth, if it were shown, would be inside the yellow dot representing the sun. The orbits of the two outermost planets, along with their current positions, are also shown. The new one has a 560 year orbit. The 2003UB313 was hard to discover because its orbital plane has a steep 44° tilt. The diameter of 2203UB313 is supposed to be one and a half times that of Pluto, but it is yet early days to say for sure. The picture shows this relative to other KBO's plus Pluto and its moon Charon and in addition our own Moon.
Side bar: Since 1949 the 48-inch (1.2 m) Samuel Oschin Telescope has been quietly working to improve our understanding of the universe. It nightly scans the skies, returning discoveries that astound and amaze. Currently it operates as a robotic telescope. The data collected is beamed via microwave to the astronomers for analysis.
The time-lapse image of a newfound planet in our solar system, called 2003UB313, was taken on Oct. 21, 2003, using the Samuel Oschin Telescope at the Palomar Observatory near San Diego, Calif. The planet, circled in red, is seen moving across a field of stars. The three images were taken about 90 minutes apart. Scientists did not discover the planet until Jan. 8, 2005. 2003UB313 blev opdaget med Samuel Oschin teleskopet, der i dag er et robot-teleskop, som scanner himlen hver nat og stråler sine data til analyse hos astronomerne via mikrobølger. Det blev bygget 1949 og har en 48" (1,2 m) linse. |
